Thursday afternoon we packed up and set off for the last round of the 2016 Thundersport GB season!
Friday morning was pretty chilled as the bike was ready and I was only doing the afternoon testing so in the meantime I was watching a few mates go round and enjoying being back in the paddock.
Afternoon testing came up, the first session wasn’t great because we all went out on dry tyres but it started to rain. Session two I went out and for Cadwell the suspension was way out so for the third and final session we had it set round about where we wanted it and managed to get some good times down.
Saturday morning we were up early and ready for the day of qualifying and race one!
Qualifying went really well!
It was damp and sketchy conditions; I was sat in pole position for most of the session and dropping my times each lap till the grip on the rear started to give on me! I backed off and managed to bring it back in 3rd position, front row of the grid for race one today!
Mega happy with that as it’s my second weekend in the 600 elite class.
Race one I started from 3rd on the grid.
Knowing I haven’t had the time to get on pace in the dry here and to really give it a go I started with hopes to just cling on to the top 5 and see how I go!
First couple of laps were okay and I was with the top 5 however I was struggling with arm pump from the off, I tried to shrug it off but it kept getting worse and I ended up dropping back to finish 7th in the race.
We had a look at the bar and brake lever positioning, we realised the front brake was too high which would have been causing part of the arm pump, I know I was holding on too tight as well and I did try to adjust it as I was riding round but Cadwell Park is so demanding and so unforgiving so I just tried to use the last couple of laps to learn the track in sections as I haven’t been here on the 600 before.
However, even though I started 3rd on the grid, I’m happy with a 7th today on a STOCK 600.
My fastest time was a 1.35.720 and I know there’s so much more time there, if it’s dry the next day I was hoping to get down to the 32’s or 33’s and get more in the mix with top 5 but if it’s wet then I wanted to go for it all!
TV day didn’t go the way I wanted… I started 11th on the grid for both races.
Race one I managed to fight my way all the way through to 2nd in the elite 600 class and 4th overall while battling through and with great riders, going into barn corner my bike decided to jump out of gear and into false neutral so I tried to correct it but before I could the rear end came round on me and spat me off the side of the bike smashing the generator casing and bruising my ribs.
Very grateful for Liam from BSR racing & Liam Warren for sorting out a generator casing to enable me to get out on track for race two.
I knew I had to pace to run at the front and fight for the win so in race two I had to put the work in again from 11th on the grid, I managed to get my way through the pack and into 3rd in the Elite 600 class and 4th overall however on the way round I kept spotting marks on the floor which would have been either oil or petrol, I don’t know what it was being dropped on the track however I backed off the pace to be careful and still managed to fall off going up the mountain.
I’m happy with my pace and I had a good weekend with everyone just not the results I wanted to finish on.
Race one: 7th
Race two: DNF
Race three: DNF
Time to have a little heal up, keep positive and be happy to say my pace was really there and where I wanted it to be to run at the front.
Without people helping me I wouldn’t be where I am now so I’d like to say thank you to all the people helping me and letting me pursue my dream.
